There are a ton more earlier connections through the same hub that are showing E7, but AA.com won't give me any options to change.
My question - is it just simply AA.com being broken (SDFC is definitely a benefit AA tries so hard to list for competitive reasons but not provide

) or is it because the rules require within 24 hours of my original departure not within 24 hours of the flight I want to change to?

All you have to do is call and request same day change within 24 hours of the flight you want to change to. I have SDC several flights where it didn't allow me to do it online, but very quickly over the phone. As long as there is E space and you are on a qualifying fare traveling via same routing, then you'll have no problem.
