I think the cost is calculated based on your paid fare. I paid $200 for CAN-HND so I think Y fare can get you a really cheap upgrade. You won't have J meal as they will bring you the Y meal. At first I felt very funny when I only me had economy food on J cabin, until I realised 2/3 of the passengers on J were having economy food.
