But in practice many hotels will upgrade both rooms, or otherwise find a compromise in terms of benefits. I think they'd prefer to earn the goodwill of RA guests rather than antagonise them. Of course there will exceptions to that: but I, and my companions, have always been well looked after.
In my experience it depends on the hotel. Often I stay at a paid rate (as RA) and book a second room for friends with points. Some hotels upgrade both rooms to club (like the IC Financial Street in Beijing) but no minibar benefits for the second rooms, other play by the book and give nothing extra for the second room.
