There is a promotion currently - earn from a partner you haven't used in one year until 21 November and get 1000 avios bonus. It works, I already got the bonus for the account I used.
So you are set to earn 1000 for every account you keep active.
Paying to transfer avios is not good, as you pay and don't get anything extra, while you may buy something you need anyway to keep the account active.
