I can remember a time when BA were free and easy with ticketing changes, this became more restrictive as BA came up with ever cheaper (and more restrictive) fares. In those days you could not fly LHR-LUX-LHR for £59.21 return, and BA wasn't profitable.
I don't know much US about revenue strategies, but is this profitable for them? Same ticket pricing regardless of time and day?
I have done this a few times in the US, on connecting AA flights. Flying LHR-LAX-SAN, immigration wait times can be pretty random and you may miss your connecting flight if there is too little connection time. Sometimes I have been booked with a 3hr layover, but got through immigration in 1/2 hour. Since there is quite a few LAX-SAN per day, they would put me on the standby list for the earlier flight, iff you haven't already checked your bag.
