If you try to cancel I would assume that BA's systems will try to cancel the ticket. For tickets booked in the US (and it sounds as if this is based on the $275 fee) you should be able to cancel only the flight reservations, leaving the ticket intact and allowing you to use the residual value to book new flights within the validity period of the original ticket.
