He would have been charged correctly, no? Isn't it furthest stop of >24 hours? Or am I missing something?

Often I've found that taking advantage of what the round-trip search engine spits out can often result in layovers in more expensive zones than the destination, though if you try to manually extend that layover using multi-city search (to something still under 24 hours) it'll calculate based on the more expensive zone. Never tried calling in about this.
