Remdk thanks for your response. It is not on the same PNR all the way. In a flurry of getting the tickets booked I did on QR DOH-JNB-DOH rather than DOH-CPT, JNB-DOH and by time I thought of it the prices had went back up. Our rt JNB-CPT is on Kulula with a 2 hour time difference between landing in JNB and taking off for CPT, hence my hesitancy to check the bags. I would have to wait for them, clear customs, and get checked in to the next flight in a small time frame.

The hand baggage rules are very clear "One piece, not to exceed 7 kg (15lb)
Maximum hand baggage dimensions are 50x37x25cm (20x15x10in) each.
In addition to your hand baggage allowance, you can also carry personal items such as one ladies handbag or one small briefcase, one coat, cape or blanket, one umbrella, one pair of crutches or walking stick, one small camera or binoculars, limited reading material, an infant’s carrying basket, and duty-free items purchased on the day of your flight.
Laptops and laptop bags have to fit within your hand baggage allowance."
Your backpack, laptop and your carry-on combined must fit into the weight limit of 7kg. As must any other items not listed above.
QR usually ignore small amounts of overweight but not excessive ones such as you are suggesting.
There are apparently luggage lockers at the airport both air side and land side. But apart from the lounge lockers I have absolutely no details.
