Unusually shaped-baggage advice please

I am travelling from Dublin-Istanbul-Bangkok this coming Sunday, in business class, then transferring to Thai to go on to Melbourne. I can't get the Dublin Turkish Airlines people to stay on the phone long enough to answer a baggage question. I have a large oil painting (done by me) that I want to give my sister in Melbourne. It is on a canvas, rolled up in a plastic tube, 1m90 long, 18 cm. diameter, and weighs 8 kg. The Turkish website makes it clear there will be a charge, though not what process may be involved. Thai does not seem to charge for outsize baggage. The painting will be checked the whole way through. So... Will I simply be able to walk up to the check-in and check it in as hold baggage with my normal case at Dublin airport?
