I'm sure I remember reading something that suggested that despite the 787-9 being somewhat bigger, due to the inclusion of the F cabin, the overall number of seats was only 2 more than the 787-8.
787-8 35J 25W 154Y = 214
787-9 8F 42J 39W 127Y = 216
The -9 has a bigger J and W cabin and a much smaller Y cabin than the -8 which results in it only having 2 more seats even though it is 20ft longer.
