While I can definitely sympathize with OP, the change was broadcast by UA/CO in multiple ways prior to effective date. A lot of people choose to ignore or skim over program news and/or fail to update a changed e-mail/mailing address. That is certainly not United's fault. The possibility of the OP not knowing the change in program rule is undeniable. "Snooze, you lose" is what comes to mind. In this case, the cost of ignoring program updates is a calculable amount. Depending on the OP's location/situation, the miles might be worth buying back.
