For the BCN-SFO I'm trying to get fare basis INN7S0T1, which has a BF of USD 899, so the total cost should be somewhere in the ~$1,500 range.
However, it seems that INN7S0T1 only works for round trips originating in Spain. If I try to combine it with any fare starting from the US, it won't work.
... how does the GDS prevent these fares from being combined?
Well, first of all I am surprised why the expert hackers are not able to explain this to you
When you open-jaw back to your departure country: US-GB//ES-US,
The fares that are combined on a half round-trip basis are:
1/2 US-GB R/T plus 1/2 US-ES R/T (even for mixed cabin) fares.
Therefore, the GDS will pick INN0S1F1 USD 3764 R/T, instead of INN7S0T1 EUR 1546 R/T.
