As for the 7E7 - I think as soon as AA can afford it they will order it, to replace the 767 and A300, and in the long run maybe some 757s too.

But in the near term AA will not be ordering anything at all. When they do I think the initial order will be for 7E7s to replace the 767s and especially the A300s, and perhaps 737-700s to replace the MD80. However given that AA will not be ordering new aircraft very soon they may want to wait for the new Boeing narrobody rumored to come after the 7E7 to replace all those MD-80s.

As for my guess for a 7E7 launch customer - JAL and ANA are rumored to be very interested. I'm also thinking Lufthansa may also take a look at the short-range version as an A300/A310 replacement, which they desperately want (LH has flatly rejected the half-baked A330-based responses Airbus has presented). I'm sure DL would very much like them but they can't afford them right now - however like AA I'm sure they'll be a major 7E7 customer when they can afford it as they have a ton of 767s that will be coming up for retirement in the next decade.

In the long term a lot of A300s, A310s, and 767s will need replacement. While the A330 does very nicely as a long-range replacement for these types (though not for an airline like AA which has a lot of animosity towards Airbus), for short-range high-density operations it is awful. The 767-400 stopgap failed but I think the 7E7 will succeed. After all Boeing Commercial Aircraft is really betting it all on the 7E7.
