I have a vague recollection from the time of that B6 incident that the 90º angle is not a random accident. There are certain steering gear failure modes that will deliberately put the nosewheel at that angle, because it is safer to land with the nosewheel at a 90º than at any other angle. At 90º, what you get is what you see in the video of the B6 accident: the aircraft can travel straight along the runway even though there will be some damage to (and fireworks from) the nose gear. If the nosewheel is rotated to any other angle, the aircraft will tend to run off one side of the runway instead of travelling straight along it, and turning the aircraft on the ground while it is travelling at high speed is not generally a good idea anyway.

A320 family experts will no doubt be able to tell us how much (if any) of the above is accurate!
