It would be quite normal to have an R2 six months in advance while only 2 seats are actually sold. I'M on this route again this week and as Jasper posted, half of J pax book in advance and others last minute. Flight passes to south america book in M so availability is usually pretty good for a same day booking.
For that reason for January, I just bought a Prem Y fare to GRU which incidentally was less expensive on my dates than a Flex Fare. This should increase my chances of u/g using e/ups esp since I have strong status as a SE and MM member.

N fare also gives me a 25% COS bonus which is useful for renewal purposes for 2018 year..
