I do not consider a vendor giving me the total price before I purchase it and it remains true after the purchase Bait and Switch only if I see extra unauthorized charges after I entered into the contractual agreement with the vendor do I consider that Bait and Switch.
Good point regarding your gas station analogy maybe yes or maybe no with purchasing fuel from the gas station that lists a higher price before I purchase it depending on how much of a price difference there was and how badly I needed to fill up my car. Isn't there a clause somewhere that prices are subject to change based upon availability until the ticket has been purchased and ticketed? Ticket purchasing is based upon urgency? How urgently do I need this ticket? Is it worth the extra$$30? What are the chances of the ticket price going up? What are the chances of the ticket price going down? Remember you have the 24 hour change/cancellation policy? Delta gives you an opportunity to cancel or change your plans witihin 24 hours after your initial purchase.
Now bait and switch is like this. Say I go to book a ticket on XL Airways. There is a link for a flight thats $300 all in from SFO-CDG r/t on XL Airways then you go through the process and two weeks later you see charges that you did not authorize $20 Seat Reservation Fee per passenger per segment. $30 Hot Meal per passenger per segment. $15 Entertainment Fee. $40 per checked bag $10 per boarding pass(whether you print it at home or at the airport and its mandatory). Now remember you booked at $300 all in and now you are seeing extra add on charges that are not ala carte and you did not agree to. Now the ticket is starting to go up towards $800 per person slowly but surely.
Same for a gas station if I don't need to fill up I'll gladly take a drive down the road to see who has the cheaper gas. If Rotten Robbie has the cheaper fuel and I don't need the premium Chevron Techron then of course I'll go to Rotten Robbie. If Southwest has the cheaper flight for the same time and I don't need Comfort + on a 1 hour flight I'll choose Southwest.
I was looking for a SJC-LAX r/t ticket the week before the lowest fare was $200 when they started to load the fares then a week later it went down to $155 in Comfort Plus and I booked it a week later it was up at $170 then back down to $160. Sure you take a risk of a lower or higher fare but no one is forcing you to "lock in" a f are after you were informed of the higher priced fare.
Now if the advertised price on Delta.Com was $860 all inclusive and I see a charge for $1100 on my credit card online banking statement now we have a problem if it was an intentional upchage without me authorizing it after my ticket was ticketed. Delta can't just say"Oops sorry we forgot to let you know you are obligated to pay the upcharge after ticketing".
