Pretty easy to put a lot of miles on rental cars. In August I rented a car from an Enterprise in Durham and drove it to Charleston, SC and back. That put on 768 miles. Later that month I rented a car from Hertz in Flagstaff, drove it to Monument Valley, then Canyon de Chelley and then Phoenix. That put on 750 miles.
I imagine plenty of people fly into SFO and then end up going to Monterey, or Santa Cruz or hell just Livermore which is 40 mile drive each way.
