That is multiple flights of stairs and not nearly as simple a transfer as moving from the 1/2/3 to the R at Times Square. Also, why would you add a transfer under the guise of making the trip easier?

The uptown trains are on one platform and the downtown trains are on a different platform at Times Square. The center platform challenge you're describing is at Penn Station which is not where the E/R/7 transfer happens.
