There have been instances where the airport agents have been able to apply upgrades to BA coded AA operated flights. It is possible. I just think it's a lot of in person HUCA to get someone to find a work around. It has been pulled off so you don't have to give up all hope but at same time you should still expect to fly in economy.

There's also the chance that paid upgrades could be made available through the kiosk for example. I would have purchased a significantly cheaper fare just like you did. And I'd try everything and never give up until those boarding doors close!
