I work at rock concerts for fun, and we surely search people. Why? Having someone stabbed at your venue is not fun, and even less so for the person getting stabbed. Sure, it's far less likely that someone can get something through the scanner, and the search may not serve a purpose, may be annoying, blah, blah, blah..but un-American? I don't think so...
Cheers.
Rock concerts are private events held at private venues. The airport is a public place - would you like to be searched at the mall or the park?
Searching people without probable cause has been unfortunately upheld to be Constitutional, due to the disgusting concept of "implied concent". But it is no less un-American then stopping people randomly on the street and frisking them/demanding papers.
