We both found the flight reasonably smooth. Seat belt sign was on for only 30 mins and even when this was on we found it was just mild turbulence.
Our friends were in row 1 in upper deck in Business. They both said it was very bumpy. They are either the same as us or better flyers.
Any view on this if there is a difference in the ride between main deck in First or upper deck in Business?
That does surprise me since you are effectively saying your friends were directly above you, and I wouldn't expect there to be much difference. BA certainly don't brace the First cabin to give its customers a smoother ride! I would normally expect those at the back of the aircraft to potentially get a much rougher ride in this scenario, not those above.
Having said that, the A380 and the B747 are both tremendous aircraft at staying stable in the air, so anyone who doesn't like a bit of rock 'n 'roll should stick to these aircraft, given a choice. The 787s, with their flappy wings to dampen the effect, are also quite good and go higher up anyway, which can help a bit. A340s can be dreadful. But if stuff is going to happen, it will happen. Buckle up tight!
Incidentally, seeing how passengers and cabin crew react to turbulence is interesting. I've come to the view that the best approach is to keep at it, after a few choppy flights people do get more and more used to it, indeed I suspect a few more experienced cabin crew are secret lovers of a spin or two....
