The same applies to legs.
So if you're a 150cm / 55kg person, you may not notice this. If you're a 190cm / 110kg person, you will.
Also depends how friendly you are with person next to you. Rubbing shoulders with wife/mistress/family might be OK, but with a stranger you might prefer the extra space more.
