I don't think that's what you're hearing at all. You asked a specific question about why might people be talking about this so much, and got answers explaining possible reasons. That's not the same thing as your hearing that "an essential component of gay travel..." You set the scope of the discussion, so be careful not to draw conclusions based on that scope.

You might also be assuming that the only things gay travelers talk about is what they post about here. That might be because you don't participate in other forums on FlyerTalk where you'll see almost every GLBT traveler on FlyerTalk discuss Travel Technology, upgrades, Great Restaurants, miles, points, and even politics among hundreds of other topics.
