Is the most essential characteristic of “gay travel” the ability of gay people to go somewhere and be surrounded as much as possible by other gay people?

This would seem to be the basis of many posts in this forum and information provided in the gay section of many travel guides. It’s understandable, given the comfort level it provides and the lower likelihood of anti-gay incidents ruining one’s recreational downtime. (Not to mention the higher profits to those who target this more affluent demographic.)

That said, some would say that “gay travel”, so defined, is counter-productive and even detrimental to future generations of gay travelers.
..... And perhaps comment on the seeming contradiction between “gay travel” and the social integration that many gay and humanitarian activists seek.
To be honest, I agree with the underlying ideal in your post, duke. I wish the world was more accepting. But when I go on vaction, I like to relax and not have to be a role model. I like to go out, dance, and be naughty if I like. I am an inner city public school teacher, I'm out to the staff at work, and even to many kids as well. I am already doing my best "integrating". That is the most important place to be a role model--in front of people you know--more than by eating at a Cracker Barrel and holding hands with your partner.......instead of a "gay" restaurant. I absolutely think this forum is to tell people specific places where they can expect to be comfortable, and not have to be role models to society. I get kinda tired sometime!
