IMHO flying on a separate ticket London-FRA just to get a Virgin Atlantic experience is a mistake. You expose yourself to luggage, check in, and irregular ops hassles and costs.
VS is also easily searchable in it's own site with an account. Exact same availability, VS pretty much only has saver awards. With a separate flight, he can and definitely should have a day or two in Lon. Can use the HeX to get into the city.
