Just a PSA: They were aggressively weighing carry-ons at TPE last time I checked-in there, even in the RL and Diamond lines. Note I was flying in BR J as *G. They were attaching orange tags to all the carry-on bags after weighing them.

My carry-on was a tad over the 10kg limit (this is what the check-in agent said the RL limit is, and had documentation for it there; the BR website states 7kg even for RL - I do not know the reason for this discrepancy).

While I won't complain about BR enforcing their stated baggage allowances, the check-in agent handled the interaction very poorly. She waited until after processing my checked luggage to weigh my carry-on, so I could no longer move stuff from my carry-on into my checked luggage. When I told her to bring the checked luggage back, she said it was not possible (which is untrue, as anyone who has gone through secondary checked luggage screening at TPE knows). When I asked to speak to a supervisor, she claimed it would take at least 20 minutes for a supervisor to arrive, obviously just trying to get me to go away. Additionally, she kept trying to speak to me in Chinese, which made the situation even more ridiculous.

As a side note, I was checking in 3 bags and she also attempted to deny me the 3rd bag even though I am *G.

What's so moronic about BR's system is that no one at security or the gate ever checks to see if the bags have the orange tags - or weighs them or sizes them or anything. So it's just a matter of hiding the bags when checking in, as so long as the check-in agent doesn't see them we're free to bring "overweight" stuff on board. Plenty of people who boarded my flight had luggage without the orange tags, and I've never seen gate agents care one bit about the weight.

It's not such a big deal if I am already planning on checking bags (although I'll have to buy new, ultralight carry-ons to get even the few things I won't check below the 10kg/7kg limit) but I usually don't check bags, and so I feel the same way. I'll find some other carrier to fly, not just because of the rule but because of the asinine way BR chooses to handle it.
