i personally do not know if non-cx airlines would re-tag your luggage in HKG. if they dont, you will need to clear immigration and checkin ur bags. do note that TG operates in T2, walkable from arrivals (all arrivals at T1) for 5-10 minutes with no alternatives. normally id think the time is enough if you dont have delays on the jfk flight. But i have a few flights that took me an hour to get my bags (even though i am eligible for j tags) and TG has a 60 mins cut-off in HKG.
I recommend you calling tg at hkg or asking at the tg forum, if they allow retagging at the transfer desk at HKG.
i dont really suggest going to departures and walk thru the train for t2 since you need to wait for a train...

Am I correct in assuming that the chances that Cathay will check our luggage all the way through to VTE are low?
If so, will we need to clear immigration, collect our luggage and re-check it? I've seen reference to transfer desks but I assume these are only useful for passengers whose luggage has been checked through?
Thanks!
