I think you have the right mindset. Upper Deck is worth paying a premium for, if only for the near First levels of staffing support. In a way, given Ancient Observer is a self described meanie, it works for all: instead of an additional sum being whacked on to the fare and getting free seating, he has the choice to save his hard won pensionable pennies for something else.

I guess the logical thing to do, in the current climate, is to allow people to pay the seating fee with Avios, should they wish.
