Your reference points are with a SAS Plus or SAS Go ticket? I would be surprised if 'standby for earlier flight' was denied when on a SAS Plus ticket, HBO and with available seats on the desired flight.

Anyway, they also don't officially allow standby (I.E. Last minute rebooking) with cheap Plus tickets and I had no luck with those at the gate and lounge as well in case the booking ckass was not available.
With the Plusgrade you end in the higher Y fare, right? Then there should be no problem to get on the next flight.
