Best first class experience doesn't depend on the length of the flight. It depends on the crew you have on the flight. You could fly F to LAX and have a rubbish crew which leaves you feeling like you've wasted your miles. On the other hand, you could fly F to JFK with an amazing crew (shorter flight) and be glad you spent the Avios.
I completely agree, it's the F cabin crew that will make your flight great, good, or not so good!
