I believe from anecdotal reports here the app computer [all sorts] will let you SDC an /UPDI fare based only on the current booking code of the coupon (i.e. P).

This (bolded), and only this, is the problem. D fares on p.s. usually run about $2,000 more than the cheapest P fares. SDC requires inventory in the same class as your current ticket. An agent making up a story about you holding a "V class ticket" is incorrect. While your complete fare basis may begin with the letter 'V', it is still a P fare and you are entitled to any and all rights derived from purchasing a restricted business class ticket on the route.


Also, in this case, it's worth noting that the 'V' is 100% a red herring. The p.s. fare table does not use differential faring, and so none of the business fares have an Economy inventory requirement. For more about the practice of differential faring for premium cabins: see here.
