MORE IMPORTANT - to unlock your phone, it must be FULLY paid for. If you are still making payments or still on a plan, you most probably will not be able to unlock it.
Also, keep in mind, when you get a SIM card, it will be a new phone number.
Many of the apps you are talking about would work fine when you have WIFI available.
As to that GPS in the car that comes with WIFI - there must be a charge. May or may not be a deal. Pretty sure they are not going to give you unlimited cell data via the wifi.
One other option we did on our RTW trip. With our unlocked ATT phone, we signed up for T-Mobile. Put their sim in the phone, and had unlimited data in every country we went to. Best $50 I ever spent. When we got home, we cancelled Tmobile and put our ATT sim back in.
