Yeah you're supposed to hit "fare rules" before you buy your ticket and fill out a reCAPTCHA. You have to do this every time you buy.
Otherwise there is very close to zero way of knowing, from your online "view my reservation" or "view eticket", what fare class you actually have and what is SDC eligible.
Not sure whether SDC on a V/UPDI fare should require V+P or just P. I have a hunch it might work with just P and no V, but it sounds like you have neither right now — try a little closer in to departure, typically within 1.5-3 hours for most flights, and they'll open up fare buckets more aggressively.
If you frequently fly premium cabins you might consider shifting your travel to Delta, who offers same-day changes for paying J pax into any flight which has J for sale at all (no specific inventory restrictions). Of course their SDC rules have some drastic limits (~truly same day, some routing issues).
