There are quite a few ways to use MR domestically in that you can redeem Avios, AF/KLM miles etc. for plenty of US domestic flight options on a variety of carriers. Avios allow you to book AS and AA, AF/KLM allow you to book DL, Aeroplan works with UA, and so on.
Avios were okay until AMEX worsened the transfer ratio. Have to wait for transfer bonuses for that to make sense now but it wasuch better in the past.
