Why would you do that when those 45k points are redeemable for $675 in travel? Or for 45k RR points which redeem at about the same value? Or for 45k UA miles or Hyatt points?

Last month I redeemed 137.5k combined UA miles and Chase points for a round trip from the West Coast nonstop to Europe, peak travel period, First class over and Business class back, with less than $200 of fees. To me that's worth more than $450 times 3. On the other hand, there's a hazard in setting a precedent for such travel for your family.
