You can do DL as multi-city as well as round-trip. Positioning flights out of SAN might be wise.
My feeling on hidden-city is you might get away with it once in a blue moon. It's just wise not to make a habit of it using frequent flyer accounts you care about (and BA is quite aware of European hidden city ticketing).
