Yeah, base fare was a dirt cheap V fare; so all in would have been a very reasonable J flight when you look at it that way ;-) Conversely, the UG fee was more than the entire RT airfare.
In retrospect, what I should have done was use miles to UG on the K+ fare I had on my last china trip a month ago and save the GUCs I burned for this one on the low fares ineligible for mile UGs.
The outbound leg, the one with the buy offer, had OP space available and had seats open right until before departure (left full; I presume a non rev or two took the last couple open seats); if I had a GUC left it would have cleared immediately on that one.
