Don't forget some status passengers are possibly some of BA's least profitable customers. For instance TP-runners spending £2-3K to get Gold status over many flights clearly aren't commercially rewarding for an airline.
This is so easy for the airlines to stop if they wanted to - they just have to stop charging unprofitable fares on some of these routes!
