That's is quite a big loss. Of course there is the Marriott hotel vacation package but that requires even more points. All that said I still think there is a place for the Southwest cards. Even if it means it's nothing more than a churn and burn card. Only question is how long will Chase and Southwest allow it.
Since this quoted my post, I'm not sure if you got the point that came up in the blog and comments. This isn't discussing direct Ultimate Rewards-CPQP transfers: it's that, if you transfer UR to RR you use the RR points for free travel, end of story. If you have UR book your trip at 1.5 UR points per dollar, you get a free trip AND earn points for redemption and CP on that trip.
I'm not sure how well it really pays off: I've found a trip with a change at $133.60 on WN and competitors. The RR points cost is 7460, plus $5.60. My UR shows trips at 1.25 points per $, but my calculation at 1.5 would be 8906. I understand that UR points cover the whole bottom-line price: you don't pay the $5.60, and you earn 622 RR CPQP points on this trip. On other fares it would work differently, and consider how much of a difference these points would make towards your CP target.
