Amazing how one can experience the same thing and end up with opposite opinions. I admit I rarely use HEX but have twice ended up standing on it. It's a disruptive and expensive journey and, because of all the changing, generally takes longer unless you are going to Paddington. By contrast, I do the Tube regularly (yesterday being the last time). I have only once ended up standing the whole way (and that was when everything was up the spout and HEX wasn't even running). I find it's perfectly pleasant sitting there, reading a newspaper and catching up on texts etc. - it runs overground for about 20 minutes. It's my bit of peace before the chaos of the airport, or the chaos of arriving home to washing and bill opening.
Timing is everything, perhaps? I don't know. Height? I generally end up regretting catching the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow by the time I leave the Hounslows, as my neck starts seizing up and I end up jostling for shoulder space...
