Just as in the past- if your upg doesn't/hasn't clrd by the time you check-in online, then of course you have to "activate" your request at the airport. This is outlined
online.
Let's say you orig requested your upg on 5APR04. Your upg window comes and goes and doesn't automatically clr (revenue mgmt might have already allocated all the upgs at this point, the flt is full etc etc). When you check-in online you get your coach BP. When you get to the airport, you then go to the kiosk or an agt and activate that upg request!
You should do this at least 45 mins prior to flt dprt- as the gate agts will begin to clr their upgs, and if they do not see you "activated," then you may miss out. If you do activate your request, then you'll be positioned w/in your priority group with a time stamp of the exact hour on 5APR04 that you originally made your upg request.
The huge advantage with the new "automated upg system" is that you don't have to call or go online at exactlly 100/72/48/24/12 hrs before your flt.
Also- more info. Let's say you're flying from DFW-CVG-LGA and both upgs didn't clr in advance. You'll activate your request in DFW for the DFW-CVG flt. IF YOU CLEAR- then you'll be automatically activated for the CVG-LGA flt. IF YOU DON'T CLEAR- then you'll have to activate your CVG-LGA request once you get to CVG.
I hope this cleared things up. I know it can be frustrating, but please don't bash the system and make false statements confusing everyone else.
