If the goal is the cheapest possible fare then the advice above about the low cost carriers is dead on. You aren't likely to find a cheaper fare.

If you are looking to fly US carriers - then look at cities ither than PDX for departures. Some EU airports are routinely cheaper than others - like DUB. Sometimes going into a EU hub city will cost more than adding an additional cinnecting flight and going on to another city.
