I am in the middle of deciding whether I should carry on with this online application or just attending a VFS nearby. According to your reply above, there was a 'send and receive passport by courier', did you mean after the online application we have to send the passport to Canadian embassy in the country to get the visa attached to the passport?

For some reason I genuinly thought that there will be no courier involved if we opt for online application process.
