I'm not sure what the United app typically displays, but you may have been seeing the runway arrival time? http://www.flightstats.com/go/Flight...ghtNumber=1871 shows both the runway arrival and the gate arrival times. The Event Timeline tab on that link doesn't show any unexpected Actual Gate Arrival times.
