False logic. AC, WestJet and other airlines added baggage fees because they could. They saw another way to make money and they took it. Just like they have the elimination of complementary meals, seat assignments, decent leg room, and a dozen other things that used to be included in the price of a ticket.
That's all well and good for the airlines. They're corporations. Their only moral obligation is to make as much profit as possible for their shareholders. As long as what they do is profitable, they're gonna keep doing it.
As it happens, I personally would like to see some sort of limitations on this squeezing of passengers -- some minimum standards that we all acknowledge airlines should respect before they're allowed to sell a ticket. If not, we could conceivably all end up stuffed into a plane sideways like cargo. But those limitations are not going to come from the airlines themselves; they'd have to come from additional industry regulation by governments.
