Yeah, I had this last week at LAX. Captain comes on and says 'Mr. X in 23A is going to Shanghai; please let him off first. His flight is in 11 minutes but if he runs I think he can make it. ' Mr. X definitely got off first, with the entire plane clapping and cheering him on.
It can work, it just takes a little effort. I always appreciate it when the crew puts in the effort, even if it's not for my benefit.
