Agreed. The OP doesn't say that it is his/her first time flying; it's hard to not be aware of this information if one has taken an airplane within the last 20 years.
No clarification needed. The OP turned up but was 'late' for their flight to New York so missed the flight. The return leg was cancelled as a result hence why they needed to buy a new return ticket rather than just a one way. BA may have been persuaded to protect the return flight but I suspect a new return was possibly cheaper than a one way in any case.
