I agree. Never heard of such a thing to do before, except for big batteries. Ie those that would power a wheelchair, or provide power backup for a data center.
It's a known risk with ordinary 9-volt batteries, which aren't exactly big, because both terminals are on the same end of the battery and thus prone to short accidentally if that end comes into contact with any conductor.
