Pan Am and the 747SP.

No round the world tickets - so it was bucket shops each way inter-continental. Or YY tickets with unlimited stops within the mileage limits. And varied combinations of airlines since there were no alliances.

Having to identify your luggage on the ground next to the airplane before boarding (ATH comes to mind)
