but percy to be fair, i think there are two dynamics at play (#1 being more important):
1.) This "new" regional J sucks so bad, and is so d#@% uncomfortable, that it's a hugge difference in comfort. Forget needing to sleep, I can't even sit comfortable for a few hours in this regional J seat. It is really bad. Recline mode is pointless. Have you tried SQ's regional J? I mean, I even prefer JL's old lazy-boy seating on the 767s to CX regional J. (it's "newer" feeling than the old CX regional J, but not by much). I still agree with Toby Smith's point that a flatbed isn't necessary on a 3-5 hour route, I can live with that. But we expect the seat to be COMFORTABLE at least! I've said in other posts, if PEY was available on regional planes I would buy that every single time over regional J. PEY is way more comfortable. I don't think CX executives subject themselves to the indignity of their own regional J class very often. I really bet most of us DMs in this forum fly it more often than them. It just sucks for comfort.
2.) There will always be miles and points maximizers who are doing that sort of thing, getting the LH product on short-haul. But personally, I wouldn't mind paying for J a lot more if the product was consistently comfortable. I simply cannot say that for this current product.
I thought it was a cool product at first look, and perhaps for my first flight. That was it. I've now flown in it far too many times to count, and the problems are the most fundamental to a seat design: CX's regional J seat is absolutely uncomfortable in virtually every position. Who the hell was testing these things? As a smaller problem, but if you're in a window (or middle on 777) seat, and the aisle pax are reclined, you cannot get out without completely disturbing them. I guess we should say fortunately the recline mode is so uncomfortable, this is less of a problem!
(smaller point, but just shows poor attention to detail...within a year of CX debuting those little phone holder areas, all the iPhones and major Android models are too big to fit. And since the space is made out of hard plastic, you can't mold it to fit a bigger phone. Whoops...just a waste)
I always try to book on a longhaul planes for my regional flights. Fortunately, most cities I fly to within Asia they'd roster longhaul planes (TPE, SIN, KUL, ICN, etc). For me, I actively avoid the regional J because it is SO DAMN UNCOMFORTABLE to a point that like you I'd rather sit in PEY! Whoever designed and tested it out before the launch back in 2013 I hope he got fired!
